Vietnam Science and Technology Day 2024

Hanoi, Vietnam – May 18 of every year was unanimously chosen by the XIII National Assembly of Vietnam as Vietnam Science and Technology Day at its 5th session (stipulated in Article 7, the amended Law on Science and Technology passed by the National Assembly in 2013 – Law No. 29/2013/QH13). May 18 is a day of special historical significance not only for Vietnamese science and technology intellectuals but also for the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations. Vietnam Science and Technology Day is a festival to honor scientists, introduce the results of scientific research and technological development, and promote the application of science and technology to production. Moreover, it is also an opportunity to raise awareness and arouse pride in Vietnamese intelligence and the spirit of passion for creativity among people from different walks of life, especially the young Vietnamese generation, in the course of construction and development of the country.

Science and technology not only affirms its enormous role and strength in the fields of industrialization and modernization of the country but also becomes a key driving force of innovation and development. Scientific and technological achievements are increasingly being paid attention to, researched, applied, disseminated and widely applied in practice, positively impacting socio-economic development, contributing to improvement of life quality, improving people’s knowledge, preserving and promoting the good values ​​of Vietnamese culture and people.

2024 is a year of acceleration, breakthrough, and decisiveness to complete the 5-year plan (2021-2025) in the spirit of the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress and the Resolution of the XVII Provincial Party Congress. With the theme of Vietnam Science and Technology Day 2024: “Science, Technology and Innovation – arousing aspirations, creating the future”, “Science, Technology and Innovation – raising high potential and national position”, the science and technology sector accompanies people and businesses to promote the desire to contribute, build trust and consensus in socio-economic development, and accomplish the goals and targets set by party congresses at all levels.

2024 is also the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) since the State Science Committee (the predecessor of MoST) was established under Decree No. 016-SL dated March 4, 1959 by the President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. It can be seen that in the course of 65 years, the achievements in science, technology and innovation have left historical marks in many key industries and fields of the country, becoming the foundation and driving force for sustainable development of Vietnam.

To celebrate the event, MoST has organized a series of the following activities:

  1. Exhibition: 65 years of innovation path; Books on science, technology and innovation; 10 years of Ta Quang Buu Award; Science, technology and innovation achievements booth;
  2. Celebration of Vietnam Science and Technology Day; Celebrating the 65th anniversary of the establishment of MoST;
  3. 2024 Ta Quang Buu Award Ceremony;
  4. 2023 Science and Technology Journalism Award Ceremony;
  5. Young Scientists Conference and Award Ceremony of the 2024 Scientific Innovation Competition.

On the morning of May 15, in Hanoi, the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Mr. Pham Minh Chinh, attended the ceremony to celebrate Vietnam Science and Technology Day, commemorate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of MoST (1959-2024) and award the Ta Quang Buu Award in 2024. Speaking at the ceremony, the Prime Minister stated that Vietnam Science and Technology Day 2024 has its special meaning in that it is also the occasion to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of MoST and to award the Science Award named after the late professor Ta Quang Buu – one of the people who laid the foundation in building and developing basic science fields in Vietnam. The Prime Minister emphasized that with many guidelines and policies of the Party and State of Vietnam on developing science and technology and promoting the role of intellectuals and scientists, the country’s science and technology industry has made great progress, achieving remarkable important achievements, making practical contributions to the cause of fighting for national liberation, building and protecting the Fatherland.
