Status on registration of patents and industrial designs in Myanmar (Burma)

Naypyidaw, Myanmar – Although Burma Patents and Designs (Emergency Provisions) Act, 1946 was enacted, that Act was never brought into force and was repealed. Under the current regime, it is still impossible to register patents and industrial designs in Myanmar.

The Draft Patent Law and the Draft Industrial Design Law of Myanmar have been introduced but they have not come into force yet. Also, Filing Guidelines have not been issued yet. The Registry Office of Myanmar no longer accepts patent registration by means of a Declaration of Ownership of Patent like before. Therefore, any patent or industrial design registration shall be carried out only after the said new laws come into force in Myanmar.
